SundayStills: Potluck – The Big 5

by | 15 comments

I’m not so sure about ‘Pot luck’, but I was lucky enough to spot all the Big 5 in my recent trip to East Africa. Big Five is a very common term used in most tourist and wildlife guides that discuss African wildlife safaris/game drives.

Lion ~ The Majestic

African Elephant ~ The Gigantic

Cape Buffalo ~ The Notorious

Leopard ~ The Elusive

Black rhinoceros ~ The Muscular

The term Big Five was given by the hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros.

An elephant is easy though isn’t it, because it can’t run fast? Although herds of elephants running toward me would FREAK ME OUT. I’d run the other way.

These photos remind me of the Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom tv show. The shots are spectacular. I just saw a show about Leopards and you are very lucky to have seen one. Amazing photography! I only hope some day that I can take photos like these.
